Writing Task:
Nowadays celebrities are more famous for their glamour and wealth than for their achievements, and this sets a bad example to young people. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Task Analysis:
It is an AD type question, where we are asked to present our opinion and support it with arguments. The task requires us to evaluate whether celebrities being more famous for their glamour and wealth than their actual achievements has a negative influence on young people. To fully address the task, we must decide if you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasons.
In terms of logic, the essay needs to first establish the issue, and then present clear arguments for our position. If we agree that this is a negative trend, we need to explain why it sets a bad example, particularly focusing on the impact it has on young people’s values and goals. If we disagree, we should provide reasons that support why this fame might not necessarily be harmful or that other factors contribute more to youth development.
Writing Sample:
Many believe that today’s celebrities are more well-known for their wealth and appearance than for their real accomplishments. I agree with this view, as it often sets a poor example for youths.
This trend is detrimental in part because it gives young people unreasonable expectations. The idea that fame and fortune are the ultimate goals is conveyed when celebrities are praised for leading luxurious lifestyles. Young people may develop a superficial mindset as a result, thinking that success is solely determined by appearance and financial gain. Therefore, if they don’t achieve the same degree of fame or fortune, they might become dissatisfied with their own lives.
Another problem is that young people might undervalue actual accomplishments when they only admire celebrities for their appearance. Celebrities who are well-known solely for their wealth or good looks usually overwhelm those who have worked hard to advance their careers or have a positive influence on society. Because young people may think that fame can be attained with little skill or effort, they may be discouraged from pursuing worthwhile goals.
Nevertheless, some might argue that having wealth and glamour does not always set a bad example. Celebrities can encourage others to live better lives or support charitable causes with their resources and reputation. Even though this may be the case in certain situations, young people are still misinformed by the general emphasis on materialism.
To sum up, even though some celebrities do make positive use of their platform, I think that young people are negatively impacted by the excessive emphasis on wealth and glamour. It pushes them to put appearance before effort and tangible success, which can eventually impede their personal growth.
