Real Writing Test 10/02: Government Policies on Unhealthy Foods

Writing Task

Some people believe that the government should impose taxes on unhealthy foods to promote public health. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this view?

Writing Analysis

This task involves discussing whether the government should impose taxes on unhealthy foods to promote public health, with an Agree or Disagree (AD) response. We need to weigh both sides of the argument — those in favor of the tax and those who believe it may not be effective. The goal is to maintain a balanced perspective.

Regarding the essay structure, we’ll follow the familiar four-paragraph format. Begin with a short introduction that rephrases the topic and states our balanced position. In the first body paragraph, we could explore the benefits of the tax, such as encouraging healthier eating habits and improving overall public health, using specific examples to support our points. In the second body paragraph, we could address the counterarguments, including the possibility that the tax may not effectively change eating habits or could burden low-income families. Then, we’ll conclude by restating our viewpoint and emphasizing the importance of a balanced approach to the issue.

Taxing unhealthy foods is a topic that gets a lot of attention. Some believe this can boost public health by promoting better eating habits. I think these taxes could help, but we need to consider other factors too.

One reason for supporting taxes on unhealthy foods is that they can motivate people to choose healthier options. When unhealthy items like sugary drinks and junk food cost more, people might think twice before buying them. For instance, if a soda is taxed heavily, a person might opt for water or fruit juice instead. This shift in choices can lead to better eating habits over time, which can help reduce health issues like obesity and diabetes. Moreover, the revenue generated from these taxes could be used to fund health education programs and initiatives that encourage healthy lifestyles, making it a win-win situation.

On the other hand, it’s important to recognize that taxes solely may not solve the problem of unhealthy eating. Many people choose unhealthy foods not just for taste, but also because they are often cheaper and more convenient than healthier options. If a family is on a tight budget, they might still buy fast food even if it’s taxed. Thereby, in combination with imposing taxes, governments should also focus on making healthy foods more affordable and accessible. This could involve subsidizing fruits and vegetables or improving food education in schools to help people understand the importance of a balanced diet. By addressing both sides of the issue, we can create a more effective strategy for improving public health.

To sum it up, although taxing unhealthy foods could promote healthier choices, it is not a complete solution. A comprehensive approach is necessary, including education about nutrition and better access to healthy foods. By integrating these strategies, we can create a healthier society.
