11/18: Should Professionals Deserve More Pay Than Celebrities?

Writing Task:

Some people believe that professionals like doctors and teachers should be paid more than sports and entertainment stars. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Task Analysis:

This is an ‘Agree or Disagree’ question asking whether professionals like doctors and teachers should earn more than celebrities. Topics about salaries and professions often show up in IELTS Writing Task 2.

The best way to approach this is with a balanced view since both sides make sense. This also makes it easier to come up with ideas. That said, it’s more common to agree that professionals should earn more because their work directly impacts everyone’s daily life significantly.

For structure, the first body paragraph can explain why professionals deserve higher pay due to their importance in areas like healthcare and education. The second can discuss why celebrities earn so much, focusing on their popularity and entertainment value.

Writing Sample:

It is believed by some that professionals like teachers and doctors should be paid more than athletes and entertainers. Although there are good points on both sides, I tend to support that workers in vital fields ought to be paid more.

Teachers and doctors are important members of society. Teachers shape the future by educating the next generation, while doctors save lives and maintain public health. Years of training, commitment, and labour are necessary for their work. For example, it typically takes more than ten years of schooling and practice to become a doctor. In contrast to athletes or celebrities, many of these professionals receive modest salaries despite their significant contributions. In addition to reflecting their worth, higher salaries for educators and physicians would encourage more people to pursue these crucial professions.

However, the high earnings of sports and entertainment stars can also be justified. These individuals often bring joy to millions and generate substantial revenue through events, endorsements, and media. A popular athlete or actor can boost the economy by attracting global audiences. Their work may seem less crucial, but it requires talent, discipline, and public appeal. Additionally, their income is largely market-driven, meaning they earn what their industries can afford. Still, this doesn’t negate the need for fair compensation for professionals who directly impact society.

In summary, professionals like doctors and teachers should be paid more because of their vital roles in society, even though athletes and entertainers deserve credit for their contributions. Finding a fair compensation plan would better represent their worth to society.
